First Man (2018) Movie Review

First Man was released on October 12, 2018 and directed by Damien Chazelle who also directed La La Land. First Man was a very different movie than most that I am used to seeing. It featured a lot of up-close shots with shaky camerawork. To me, I felt like they used this style to convey the powerful nature of the spacecraft.

The movie was a lot more emotional than I thought that it was going to be. It featured a story about Neil Armstrong, however it wasn’t just about him going to the moon. It told the story of his family life, and how his daughter had died. The family element added a lot to this movie and at times it made it understandable for how Neil Armstrong was acting.

The actors and actresses in this movie were great. Ryan Gosling played Neil Armstrong feasibly well. He showed enough emotion, however still managed to play a straightforward character. Claire Foy was also amazing as his wife Janet Shearon. She showed true emotion in this story as she was battling between trying to help her children and trying to make sure that their father would even talk to them. The cast in this movie was phenomenal so there were no issues in that department.

The only issue with the movie is that we’ve heard about the moon landing before. This story has been told many times, however not really with as much emphasis on Neil’s family. I think that is the element that makes this movie stand out and makes it a very good watch. First Man is a movie that should be watched by everyone as it offers unique elements and a much deeper story into Neil Armstrong’s life. I give this movie a 7 out of 10 on the scale of awesomeness as it isn’t for everyone, however it tells a great story.
