Scream was released in 1996 and directed by the great Wes Craven. When I watched this movie for the first time as a young kid around the age of twelve I was utterly terrified. Now, as a college student, I look back and wonder how I was so scared of this movie.
There is a creepy and anxiety-filled vibe going on throughout the entirety of this movie, however it knows how to be funny as well. There are several moments throughout the movie where you are scared, however they add comedic elements to lighten the mood. The beginning of this movie was the perfect opening to a horror movie as well. It gave an initial shock that stayed in the audience’s mind for quite a while. The end was also outstanding. My favorite line came at the end when the two killers had nearly stabbed each other to death when Stu said, “My mom and dad are gonna be so mad at me”.
The ghost face killer was also perfect for this movie. Imagining the killer looking a different way just seems to ruin the movie. The acting was also phenomenal and drove the story smoothly. Neve Campbell played Sidney perfectly and delivered a lot of emotion and surreal emotions throughout the story arch. Courteney Cox who played Gale and David Arquette who played Dewey also added unique elements to the story. Dewey also added a lot of much needed comedy throughout.
Overall, Scream is still widely talked about today and is looked upon fondly by most horror movie lovers. It is one of my favorite movies and it hasn’t gotten any worse as time has gone on. Wes Craven definitely decided to make the movie at just the perfect time and the way he told this story was amazing. I would definitely recommend watching Scream to anyone who loves horror movies. I give this movie an 8.5 out of 10 on the scale of awesomeness as it delivers great scares and laughs along a great roller coaster ride.
