Isle of Dogs (2018) Movie Review

Isle of Dogs was released on March 23, 2018 and was directed by Wes Anderson. It takes place in the future in Japan when all dogs are moved to Trash Island due to the many diseases that they carry. The story then continues when a young boy flies over to the island in search for his dog. He then goes on a journey with the other dogs to find him.

Well… this movie is definitely a lot different than most others released currently. It obviously looks a lot different than others due to it’s somewhat weird animation style. Personally, I liked how it looked, however, some of the people sometimes look like zombies or like they’re decaying which is a little weird. This film carried some political messages with it as well as it kind of shows a relationship between Japan and the U.S. It has all of the people speaking in Japanese, yet all of the dogs are speaking in English. I think this movie always shows maybe how our future could look like. It shows a whole island of trash which is very seeable in our future.

All of the voice actors did great in this movie. There were a lot of major names including Jeff Goldblum, Bryan Cranston, Scarlett Johansson, Edward Norton, Bill Murray, and Tilda Swinton. With all of those great actors and actresses doing the voice overs I expected it to flow very smoothly, and it definitely did.

The major flaw that I have with this movie is that it can get a little boring at times. The first initial reaction is, “Wow, this is really cool there are talking dogs!”. However, after the first half of the movie you kind of just get used to seeing this and it just seems like a regular movie. Still, it’s not boring enough to fall asleep, it just gets a little slow at times.

Overall, Isle of Dogs is a very different movie than most people are used to. It may scare some people away in the U.S. due to it being largely based in Japan. It also may scare away people due to it’s weird animation and story. However, if you do love movies then this is one that should be checked out. It shows brilliant filmmaking and offers a unique story that is cool to see. I give Isle of Dogs a 7 out of 10 on the scale of awesomeness because it was a very unique movie, however it got a little boring at parts.
