Godzilla: King of the Monsters (2019) Movie Review

One comment

Godzilla: King of the Monsters was released on May 31, 2019 and directed by Michael Dougherty. I got the privilege to see this movie opening night in a relativity empty theater. It was definitely a movie that was all over the place, however it kept my attention throughout. As most other reviews say, it had great special effects and all of the monsters and fight sequences looked fantastic.

First off, I didn’t think that the cast in this movie did as awful as critics have led many to believe. Millie Bobby Brown played Madison, and I felt that she played her role quite well. She conveyed emotions and what she said never really seemed fake. Kyle Chandler played Mark who was Madison’s dad. I felt as if his performance was okay too, there were just some scenes where he felt a little flat. Then there was Vera Farmiga who played Emma, who was Madison’s mother and Mark’s ex-wife. Her performance was also okay, her character just wasn’t all that interesting really. That really is the morale of the story for the cast of this movie. They all acted pretty well in their roles, however their characters aren’t all that interesting and there really isn’t that much to work with on that end. Still, the critics make it seem as if it was just awful performances, which in my opinion it wasn’t.

The monsters in this movie looked absolutely stunning. There were certain scenes in the movie when my jaw just dropped because of how outstanding it looked. The main monsters featured in the movie were Godzilla (obviously), Mothra, Rodan, and King Ghidorah. Specifically Godzilla and King Ghidorah were breathtaking in their appearances as they fought each other. That leads to my next topic in that the fight sequences were also amazing. These scenes had a unique look that most all other movies don’t have and it really looks good. These scenes also had me on the edge of my seat as I was enjoying giant monsters duke it out.

Godzilla: King of the Monsters is definitely a movie that relies heavily on special effects and CGI. In my opinion, this all worked great and the movie looked amazing. However, it does fall some in that I didn’t really see a purpose of this movie in setting up Godzilla vs. King Kong. I feel like this was more just to gain some money. After just seeing the movie, I can still say that I enjoyed it. I think that there are some issues with it, but in the end it was still a very entertaining movie that I think can be enjoyed by almost anyone. This movie will for sure make fans of Godzilla happy as he is featured a lot and there are many battles and fights to be seen in the movie.

In the end, I was pretty pleased with this movie. I didn’t really know what to expect going in because of how poor the critic reviews were. Leaving the movie I felt that it was worth my time and I would see it again. However, I think it could have done a better job of setting up Godzilla vs. Kong. I give Godzilla: King of the Monsters a 7 out of 10 on the scale of awesomeness because it was a movie that a Godzilla fan will appreciate, however it does suffer in some of the story and characters.
