Poms was released on May 10, 2019 and directed by Zara Hayes. This was a movie that I wasn’t expecting a lot out of going in. However, I somewhat enjoyed the movie and I got quite a few laughs out of it. There were still some things that bothered me in it, but I think the good outweighed the bad.
Diane Keaton was the main character of the story as she played Martha. Overall, I thought that she did a pretty good job of playing her character. Alisha Boe also did a good job in her role of the younger cheerleader who eventually became part of the group and helped the older women. None of the characters seemed to have a whole lot of charisma to me. They were mostly all older and besides a few that were very comedic most of them were just straightforward characters. Still, I think that the cast in this movie did a pretty decent job.
The story of this movie was very unique. It was refreshing to see a new story, rather than the now common superhero films, or any other reboots. I think that is the main strength of this movie. It offers a new story and it definitely appeals to an older audience, however I think that younger viewers can enjoy it too.
There were several things in this movie that bothered me. One issue that bothered me quite a bit was that for over half of the movie I kept getting close up shots where all of the tops of the characters heads were cut out due to how it was filmed. I don’t know if that was just because of the theater I was at (I hope that was the case), but it happened quite often and annoyed me. Another issue was that the younger cheer group drama seemed like it was a bit much. I would hope that a younger group of kids wouldn’t just instantly start making fun of a group of older people. I feel like that is somewhat unrealistic, however it wasn’t a huge issue for me. The first half of the movie was also pretty boring to me, but the second half saved the day.
Poms was a refreshing movie that wasn’t executed perfectly. It offered several laughs throughout and I think that it can appeal to a wide range of audiences. I give Poms a 6 out of 10 on the scale of awesomeness as it was fairly enjoyable, but just fell flat on a few parts. I would just recommend waiting until this movie is released on blu-ray to see it unless the story really appeals to you.
