Us (2019) Movie Review

Us was released on March 22, 2019 and was written and directed by Jordan Peele. This was one of the craziest movies that I have seen and I was actually a fan of the big twist at the end. It yet again shows Peele’s amazing talents and shows that he has a bright future ahead.

Phenomenal… that’s what the cast was. The four stars in this movie had to each play two different characters. You may think that would be hard to do, but they each did an outstanding job. Lupita Nyong’o was so good in her role of Adelaide. She was the main character in the story and she played both roles amazingly. Her voice for her “tethered” self was so good and shows just how much time she spent studying and preparing for this movie. Winston Duke, Shahadi Wright Joseph, and Evan Alex were all also amazing as well. Each of them were also members of the family and they also had to play two different characters. The acting was definitely a driving force in this movie.

The story was somewhat complicated and it did leave me confused a bit at times. The family was on vacation and the boy sees that there is a family in their driveway. When they enter the home they then see that they are looking at themselves. After they begin speaking we see that the versions who entered their home are “tethered” and they are clones. They have been forced to live underground and now have risen to take over. Towards the end of the movie it is revealed… spoiler alert… that Adelaide’s “tethered” self was actually her original self. They were switched when she was just a young child and the original Adelaide was then forced to stay underground while the tethered one lived above ground like a normal person. This was all very confusing to understand at times as it doesn’t tell you if they even knew that they were switched or if they didn’t remember it happened.

The main complaint I have with this movie is that it is just hard to follow at times. The premise is extremely interesting and I think that it could have been carried out in a better way. I did appreciate the twist with Adelaide at the end, however it did add more confusion and some plot holes. I think that the film would have done better if they trimmed it down some and took away some plotlines. It is also very odd how their “tethered” selves didn’t just kill them right away while we can see other families being killed instantly. Overall, there were a lot of things left unexplained which isn’t necessarily a bad thing, however I think that more should have been explained in this scenario.

Us was still a movie that I thoroughly enjoyed even with all of the confusion. I thought that it had a lot of hidden meanings and it sent some messages about current America. I give Us a 7.5 out of 10 on the scale of awesomeness because I think that it was a very exciting second entry from Jordan Peele. The confusing aspects and plot holes lowered my rating some, but it was still a very exciting to movie to watch.
