Ma (2019) Movie Review

Ma was released on May 31, 2019 and directed by Tate Taylor. It definitely has a weird premise, but it does pay off… somewhat.

The movie starts off with Maggie and her mom moving into their new house back where her mom was from. She meets some new friends and they invite her to hang out with them. They’re trying to get someone over 21 to buy them beer and after several no’s Sue Ann (Ma) comes along and says yes. This then all turns into a whole sort of stalker situation as she starts looking all of them up on social media. She also invites them all to come party in the basement of her house as long as they don’t go upstairs. After their first party you can start to notice little things that seem weird and then it turns into chaos. All of the movie is basically Sue Ann’s payback for what happened to her in high school.

The cast of this movie was pretty good, with the star of the show being Octavia Spencer playing Sue Ann (Ma). She plays her character very well as she does an exceptional job as genuinely seeming quite insane. She has several scenes where she really scared me of what she was going to do next. Diana Silvers plays Maggie who is the new girl in town. She does a pretty good job, however there are just some parts where the acting was a little bad. Then we had Juliette Lewis who played Erica who is Maggie’s mom. She also had some weird scenes where acting wasn’t great, but for the most part she did a good job. To me, Octavia Spencer was really the only great performance in this movie. Everyone else is pretty much average, so in the end the cast did a decent job.

There were several things that I really enjoyed about this movie. The main thing I enjoyed was the pacing. I liked how they kept sprinkling little bits of weird things that were happening until it finally all exploded into an array of madness. It never really seemed slow or boring to me, so they did a good job in that department. I also liked how they portrayed the character Ma. I found her desire for payback somewhat believable because what happened to her in high school really hurt her. It’s realistic that such an awful past experience could lead to a lot of anger and maybe even partial insanity. This was a story that held my interest from the moment I saw the first trailer, and the movie kept that interest throughout.

The main thing that I disliked was that their really wasn’t much crazy horror until the last 20 minutes of the movie. I think they could have maybe made the movie a little longer in order to have a better final act of even crazier horror than we were given. I think the reviews could have been a lot better if they would have just been a little riskier and added more horror content. Other than that complaint I really don’t have any other problems with this movie.

Rating– 7 out of 10 on the scale of awesomeness. I really did enjoy this movie, however I just don’t think it reached it’s full potential.
