Stronger (2017) Movie Review

Stronger was released in the U.S. on September 29, 2017 and was directed by David Gordon Green. This is truly a motivational and inspiring story that really connects with it’s audience.

The story centers around Jeff Bauman as he wants to get back together with his ex-girlfriend Erin Hurley. He is trying to impress her by going to cheer her on at the Boston marathon. Then the explosion happens… and he ends up losing both of his legs. His whole family and Erin comes to the hospital to see him and he tells one of them that he saw one of the bombers. He then tells the police what he saw and his help eventually leads to them catching the bombers. The rest of the movie is him trying to recover from the tragedy that happened to him. He goes through therapy, depression, and just trying to be normal without his legs.

The cast in this movie was phenomenal. Jake Gyllenhaal played Jeff Bauman and he was just exceptional. Jake Gyllenhaal is probably my favorite actor and this performance did not disappoint. Throughout the movie he laughed, he screamed, and he cried. For him to be able to convey the horror and trauma that happened was just amazing. Honestly parts of the movie gave me goosebumps just because the emotions he delivered were so real. Tatiana Maslany played Erin Hurley who was Jeff’s ex. She also did an incredible job of delivering a real performance that us as an audience could believe. The rest of his family all did a great job too, however their performances were no where near as good as Gyllenhaal’s and Maslany’s. In the end, the cast did a great job of delivering a realistic and emotional story.

This is definitely a movie that I really enjoyed. Even though we have seen the story of the bombing before, we haven’t seen it in depth on one person. So I think that added a very personal touch and I really enjoyed it. As I already previously mentioned the acting was amazing too. I also think that when you tell a story that is so inspiring and motivational that it is kind of just hard not to like.

The only negative with this movie is that I feel like the ending was very rushed. They never really showed his progress of when he was really able to start walking well again. The movie just kind of ended and I wasn’t the biggest fan of that.

Rating– 8.5 out of 10 on the scale of awesomeness. It was a movie that I think anyone could feel connected to and very much enjoy.
