Suicide Squad (2016) Movie Review

Suicide Squad was released in the U.S. on August 5, 2018 and was directed by David Ayer. It has a promising premise, but it is sure one heck of a mess…

The film starts off with Amanda Waller, the head of a secret government agency, telling her colleague about the group of villains she is trying to recruit for different missions. They each have to do the missions that she asks of them and then they will be rewarded with lessened prison sentences. The rest of the movie is basically them trying to save the world plus a lot of pop music playing constantly.

The cast in this movie was fine… and nothing better. There were a few good performances, but other than that it was pretty standard and even sub-par in parts. In my opinion the best performance of the movie was Margot Robbie as Harley Quinn. She played the character as she was supposed to and seemed quite insane and psycho. I also really liked seeing Will Smith as Deadshot. I really like Deadshot as a character and I really can’t fault Will Smith for anything. He brought a lot of charm to the movie and played his role as best as he could. Jared Leto also did a good job as the Joker. They really decided to change how the Joker looked and I wasn’t that big of a fan of that. However, his acting was great as he brought his own new take to the character. Everyone else in this movie was pretty average or below. There really weren’t any standout performances which is sad because the cast had a lot of potential.

Now it’s time for the things that I liked… and there wasn’t much. I enjoyed seeing all of these villains working together to try and do good. We never see that in other superhero movies so that was very interesting to see. I also liked that there were several funny parts that helped lighten the mood and keep the movie slightly entertaining. That’s about all that I liked sadly…

The main thing that I disliked about this film was just… basically everything. First, I thought that some of the characters were portrayed very poorly. Really everyone besides Harley Quinn and Deadshot had several problems. The Joker could have been a really cool character in this movie, but they decided to have him on screen for about 10 minutes or less which was a really big bummer. The story was also just so poorly edited together as at times it seemed like they were just taking random clips and mashing them together. The first 20 minutes of the movie was Amanda Waller introducing our characters in a montage of scenes. These scenes had no chronological order at all and they were just random. There had to have been other ways that they could have introduced the characters. We also have to talk about the music… yes, music is something that can add some flare and make a movie fun. However, when you constantly play pop music at the dumbest times it can definitely become distracting. Finally, Enchantress was just a weak villain. She really didn’t seem all that powerful, she had a pretty boring origin, and she was kind of just there for no reason. This movie had so much potential to be really good, unfortunately they went in the completely wrong direction with it.

There were a few things that I liked about this movie, however the bad outweighs the good by a long shot. Some people may find this film fun and exciting, however I think most people will not enjoy it.

Rating- 3.5 out of 10 on the scale of awesomeness. Too many poor choices were made while making this and the end result is pretty bad.
