The Hate U Give (2018) Movie Review

The Hate U Give (or THUG) was released in the U.S. on October 19, 2018. It was directed by George Tillman Jr. and is based off the book written by Angie Thomas. It offers a powerful message while still having a great story.

The story centers around Starr who is the daughter of Maverick and Lisa Carter. She has one brother named Sekani and a half-brother named Seven. Her family lives in Garden Heights, but she goes to school at Williamson Prep (a private school). She goes to a party with Kenya (who is Seven’s half sister too) and ends up seeing her old friend Khalil. A gun is shot at the party and Khalil offers to take Starr home. On the way he gets pulled over and the cop asks him for his license and registration. Khalil asks why he got pulled over instead of listening and is told to get out of the car. He ends up getting shot by the white police officer as Starr watched it all happen. The rest of the movie is about her recovering from that traumatic event and trying to gain her voice in speaking up for Khalil and all African Americans.

The cast in this movie was adequate, but there really weren’t any tremendous performances. Amandla Stenberg plays Starr and she does a really good job with her performance. For the most part all of her lines are delivered well and I appreciated what she brought to the film. Regina Hall plays Starr’s mom (Lisa) and Russell Hornsby plays her dad (Maverick). Both of them bring a lot of talent to the movie and they did good too. K.J. Apa played Chris who was Starr’s boyfriend. I wasn’t super fond of his acting, but in the end it wasn’t awful. All of the acting was pretty good and I didn’t think anyone really had an awful performance.

The main thing that I liked about this movie was the powerful message that it gave. It showed our main character overcoming something very tragic and becoming strong again. I liked how Starr was able to tell her story to everyone and gain her voice. The issue of cops racially profiling African Americans is also a major issue in our country right now. So I think that it is important for people to see this movie as it addresses the issue. The story of the movie was also very interesting and it kept me attentive throughout. There were also some scenes that were very intense and those were very realistic. The emotional aspect of this movie was also very powerful.

The only thing that I didn’t really like about the movie was some of the acting wasn’t that great. There were some scenes without our main characters that were kind of awkward sounding due to the poor acting. It wasn’t bad enough to downgrade the movie a lot, however it was a problem at times.

In the end, this is a movie that everyone should watch as it is very important in our current society. It delivers a powerful message and story as we see our main character fight for what she believes in.

Rating- 8.5 out of 10 on the scale of awesomeness. A very serious toned movie that most people should be able to enjoy.
