La La Land (2016) Movie Review

La La Land was widely released in the U.S. on December 25, 2016 and was directed by Damien Chazelle. A musical/romance filled with several great songs and a pretty interesting story as well.

At the beginning of the movie we see our two main characters (Mia and Sebastian) meet in Los Angeles traffic. This initial meeting doesn’t end well as Sebastian is honking at her and ends up flipping her off. Next we see Mia have an acting audition go poorly and she goes home upset. Her friends practically force her to go to a party and afterwords she goes to a restaurant and sees Sebastian again, and he proceeds to ignore her and storm out. Then they end up meeting again at a party and a connection between the two is finally made. Sebastian’s dream is to start his own jazz club and Mia wants to be an actress. Sebastian joins a jazz band and has to start traveling all over the country while Mia is preparing for her one-woman play. Both of them grow continuously busy and a lot of stress is put on their relationship.

I did enjoy the cast and all of the singing in this film. The two stars (Ryan Gosling and Emma Stone) playing Sebastian and Mia were excellent. While I don’t think these two are the most amazing singers on the planet, they both still did a pretty great job. There weren’t any moments where I was disappointed with how a song sounded and I liked the chemistry that they had. John Legend played Keith who was the person who persuaded Sebastian to join the Jazz Band. He wasn’t in the movie for an extended time, however I still liked what he brought. He was a nice addition as everyone knows who he is, and his voice sounds amazing. Everyone else in this movie also did a very good job with their acting and singing. Therefore, this department was a success for this movie.

The thing that I enjoyed most about this movie were the songs. I am not a musical kind of guy, however for some reason I really enjoyed this movie. I thought that all of the songs were very catchy and they were stuck in my head for quite some time. I specifically loved the opening song as it was a great and lively way to start the movie. The next thing that I admired about this movie was that I could connect to the characters. Mia had troubles getting acting parts sometimes because she wasn’t “pretty” enough. That is something that everyone can connect with because we all feel that way sometimes. Sebastian also had to make decisions between his girlfriend and his dream. You can feel for him and understand why he made the decisions that he did.

There were just a couple things that I disliked about La La Land. First, it became a little boring in the middle duration of the movie. It wasn’t boring enough that I could fall asleep, but it really wasn’t all too exciting. The ending to this movie also really wasn’t my favorite. It just kind of ended, and it wasn’t the ending that I was hoping for. However, I believe the director has stated that he didn’t want a typical Hollywood movie so he decided against the happy ending. I give them props for trying something different, though I would have liked to see a more preferred ending.

La La Land can be enjoyed by just about anyone in my opinion. It offers different takes on typical musical and romance movies which helps make it more watchable to everyone. It delivers a great cast, outstanding music, and a very entertaining plot.

Rating- 8.5 out of 10 on the scale of awesomeness. A really well made film that I find very rewatchable.
