The Nice Guys (2016) Movie Review

The Nice Guys was released in the U.S. on May 20, 2016 and was directed by Shane Black. It is a movie with a very unique and funny premise with two stars that have great chemistry.

We see Holland March who is a private investigator being hired by an older lady to find her niece. Her niece, a pornstar named Misty Mountains, just died, however she claimed to see her alive. His investigation leads him to a girl named Amelia. We are then introduced to our other main character, Jackson Healy, who’s job is to basically scare, hurt, and intimidate people for a living. The remainder of the movie is about the two of them investigating the matter together as the case becomes larger, dangerous, and completely insane.

The cast in this movie is terrific as the two stars work very well together. The two main characters are Holland March played by Ryan Gosling and Jackson Healy played by Russell Crowe. The two really do a terrific job of diving into their characters. Gosling’s character is drunk half of the time and he does a good job of seeming hazy and confused. He brings a lot of comedy to the movie and is very funny in his role. Crowe’s character is very intense and is more of the “bad cop”. He did a great job of bringing the grittiness and charm that his character possessed. Angourie Rice played Holly who was Holland’s daughter. She was in the movie for quite a bit of time as well and she also did a good job. She had a very sassy performance as her character was back-talking and sneaking around everywhere. Those three were really the only characters featured heavily in the film and I thought that they did a great job. They brought this movie to life and definitely all had great chemistry.

One thing that I liked about this movie was how unique it was. I thought that they chose a weird premise with searching for a dead porn star, however they were able to pull it off effectively. The film spends a lot of time with our two main characters just sitting around talking, but it doesn’t ever get too boring. They always continuously incorporate jokes or action sequences to keep the movie entertaining. I also enjoyed how the movie was set in 1977. The whole film and the characters in it just seemed like they fit into this time period perfectly. Overall, this is a movie that is really effective in delivering a great story that surprisingly has a somewhat powerful message. Ryan Gosling’s character struggles a lot, but we see him overcome these things and ultimately solve the case. This lets the audience know that anything is possible and it is nice to see a positive message being given from such a non-serious movie.

While this is a unique film, there are still some aspects of it that we have seen before. We have seen the buddy cop investigator movie before, however this movie just pulls it off in a different way which makes it great. Really the only problem I had with this film was that at times it became pretty cheesy. Specifically at the end, parts of it become continuously more unrealistic. While this isn’t a huge issue, I would have liked it to stay as realistic as it was for the other portions of the movie.

In the end, this is a very entertaining and funny film. I would definitely not recommend that children not watch it as it features a very adult story that revolves around a porn film. Anyone who likes comedies should have a good time with this and enjoy it very much.

Rating- 8 out of 10 on the scale of awesomeness. A buddy-cop film that is very funny while also having a decent amount of action. I really enjoyed this movie.
