Dark Season 1 Review

Dark is a Netflix Original German TV show which premiered it’s first season on Netflix on December 1, 2017. It was co-written by Baran bo Odar and Jantje Friese.

The show starts off in 2019 with a couple of children beginning to disappear from a town in Germany. As the children go missing their family’s relationships begin to suffer and many secrets come out. The story goes through time travel and how it can affect the future and past and it prompts many intriguing questions throughout the season.

The main characters in this season were Jonas Kahnwald played by Louis Hofmann, Ulrich Nielsen played by Oliver Masucci , Charlotte Doppler played by Karoline Eichhorn, and Hannah Kahnwald played by Maja Schöne. I won’t dive into how each of these cast members did specifically because they were speaking German so I had to listen to the English version. Even though I didn’t hear them I could still see that each actor and actress did a great job in their role. Some of the English voice overs were very distracting to me honestly. Specifically with the children there were a lot of sub-par English voices, however most of the adults sounded good and smooth. This didn’t ruin the show, still, I hope that this being in German won’t sway people away as it is an amazing story.

The thing that made this first season so amazing to me was just the story. It is so unique and the way that it is told is truly something that we have never seen before. It has been compared to Stranger Things which I think is a little bit true. However, this show goes in a really different and “darker” direction. The story is very intense in parts and went in many different directions that I have never seen another show have the guts to do. There were certain scenes in this show that made my jaw drop as it truly shocked me. The story is also very interesting to me. I enjoyed seeing the time travel and wormhole element as I am kind of a geek and science nerd at times. The wormhole is really what brought the whole story together and made it as crazy as it was. I give this show all of the praise possible just for being very ambitious and going in some crazy, bold directions. The show was also shot very beautifully as there were an abundance of shots that looked really cool. They did a really great job directing and shooting this show.

Besides the English voice overs, the only other complaint I had with this show was that it was hard to follow at times. Sometimes I felt like I just looked away for one second and then I missed something insanely important. That isn’t necessarily a negative aspect, it just means that this show requires the audience to pay a lot of attention.

This is a very crazy and ambitious sci-fi show that goes is bold in what it is trying to do. It offers a very unique story about time travel and how the future, past, and present are all interconnected. I was always locked in and entertained throughout the whole ten episode season. I would highly recommend this to anyone who has Netflix and anyone who likes science-fiction.

Rating- 8.5 out of 10 on the scale of awesomeness.
