Rocketman (2019) Movie Review

Rocketman was released in the U.S. on May 31, 2019 and directed by Dexter Fletcher. It is a very refreshing and mostly real take on Elton John’s life.

I thought that the cast in this film did a terrific job. The featured actor was Taron Egerton who played Elton John. Unlike Bohemian Rhapsody, all of the songs in this film were sung by Taron Egerton rather than just the recording of Elton John. He did a terrific job singing and he did a good job on every song. Elton John’s songwriter, named Bernie, was played by Jamie Bell. His character was very likeable, and he did a good job of conveying all of the emotions that were necessary for his role. These two were really the only main characters in the film and the whole cast really did a good job.

The main thing that I enjoyed about this movie was that it told Elton John’s story in a very different and unique way. It offered the audience a plethora of emotions, while still maintaining to tell the story very unconventionally. There were a lot of parts in the film that were like a musical, while others were very straightforward. I liked how they added the musical elements and also still managed to tell his story effectively. They did also switch some details about his life, so not everything was 100% true, however that wasn’t really a problem to me as the movie was largely entertaining. The next positive was all of the songs and the singing by Taron Egerton. Obviously, all of the songs were very good as they were all songs that we have heard before, however Taron Egerton’s rendition’s of each of them were all done very well. I didn’t have any problems with him singing and I actually enjoyed his takes on the songs. The film also did a good job of showing his struggle to find love and discovering his sexuality. It really dove in to specific details of his life and I really appreciated that.

One thing that I wasn’t too fond of was the runtime. It lasted 2 hours and 1 minute, and while this wasn’t a terribly long film, I still think that they could have shortened it some. There were some scenes that they probably could have shortened or taken out completely. In the end, this really wasn’t a huge issue for me, however I do think that it could have been shortened. The only other issue that I had was that they made it seem like Elton John’s whole life was just utterly awful. I don’t know a lot about his life, however they made it seem like every day of his life was outrageously awful, which I don’t think was really the case.

Overall, I would definitely recommend this to anyone who is a fan of Elton John. If you enjoy a good musical then I also think you would like this film. In the end, I really appreciated how Rocketman told it’s story and it was a refreshing take on Elton John’s life.

Rating- 9 out of 10 on the scale of awesomeness.
