Stuber (2019) Movie Review

Stuber was released in the U.S. on July 12, 2019 and directed by Michael Dowse. It is a plot that we have seen before, however the incredible chemistry between the two leads make it a refreshingly entertaining watch.

The story features around Stu and Vic. Stu works at a store, but is also an Uber driver who wants his first 5 star rating on the app. Vic is a detective who just had Lasik eye surgery and called for an Uber. Stu then arrives to pick him up and they have to fight a lot of “bad guys” and Stu has the craziest day of his life.

The cast in this film is very good. Stu is played by Kumail Nanjiani who I believe always gives very good performances. He does a good job of really seeming clueless to everything that is going on and he definitely brings most of the comedy to the film. Vic is played by Dave Bautista and he also adds a great element to the story. His character can’t really see most of the time and he does a great job of selling to the audience that he really can’t see. His character is more of the tough cop, while Stu is always scared which adds great comedy. They both worked very well together and they were great leads for this film.

The main positive of this film is the mix of comedy and action. While it is mostly comedy based, when it gets to an action scene it doesn’t hold back. All of the action scenes were shot very well and were all very believable. The comedy portions of the film never really got boring and really they were all quiet believable. Most of the comedy came from Stu not wanting to be thrown into this crazy situation and I think that is how most people would feel which is why it is so funny and relatable.

The only mixed aspect of this film to me is that it features a very reused plot. We have our tough main character who is paired with someone else who is always scared and doesn’t want to be apart of the situation. We have seen that story so many times, however they did add some refreshing comedy and other moments to it which is why it isn’t a negative to me.

The only negative I had with the film was that it was honestly too short for me. I wish that I could have seen a few more fight scenes along the way with the two main characters as each scene was just hilarious. It would have been cool to see a much larger scale fight scene with our two main characters.

Overall, this is a film that I think almost anyone can enjoy. It offers a substantial amount of comedy, while also throwing some nicely shot action sequences in the mix. It is a very entertaining film that I will definitely be watching again.

Rating- 7 out of 10 on the scale of awesomeness.
