The Underdoggs Review — Snoop Dogg comedy full of laughs despite insistence on profanity

The Underdoggs came out on Prime Video on Friday, Jan. 26. The film follows Jaycen Jenning, a former NFL star who agrees to coach a youth football team to avoid prison.

For the most part, the comedy here is… cussing. From the kids, adults and everyone, this is probably the most swearing I’ve heard in a single movie in a long time. This is funny at times, but it does get old pretty quick. The Underdoggs is full of mostly juvenile humor, so whether or not you like this movie really depends on how you respond to that.

This is a flick that we’ve seen done several times before. The main difference — this features Snoop Dogg. He adds some flare to the pretty generic script and makes this a pretty fun watch overall. The film never really strays away from similar films from the past, but it does have its moments that stand out.

Like I stated before, the profanity is really the biggest issue here. It works in moments, but at a certain point it’s almost absurd how many times they’re cussing just in a single sentence. It makes it feel less grounded in reality, and detracts from some of the more sincere moments. The flick also feels rushed in spots, with some of the character development being glossed over to allot more time to the comedy.

The Underdoggs doesn’t always stick the landing, but I’d be lying if I said that I didn’t enjoy it. It’s a breeze to get through at 101 minutes, and in the end it’s just a feel-good story. I’m sure some people will absolutely hate this film, but it was a passable effort full of laughs for me.
