“The Wild Robot” follows a robot named Roz, as it builds relationships with the native animals of a deserted island and develops a parental bond with an orphaned gosling.
“The Wild Robot” has incredible visuals that perfectly capture the beautiful landscape. The film uses an animation style that stands out in its uniqueness, with vibrant colors and a painting-like experience. The score is one of its biggest strengths as well, with the movie bringing in pulsating music at all of the right moments.
This is a heartfelt, emotional story about parenthood and belonging. Whether you’re a parent or not, it’s very easy to relate to the subject matter of growing up and trying to fit in. It captures that perfectly, as all three of the main characters go on a journey to fit in with those around them.
“The Wild Robot” manages to be a suitable film for children and adults alike. It has all of the humor that will make kids laugh, but also conveys a meaningful message about community. For adults, it’s a story of parenthood and resilience about caring for someone else while still growing up yourself. This is constantly pulling at heartstrings, whether it’s just the interactions between the community of animals or the personal relationships of Brightbill, Roz and Fink.
The film is extremely effective as a tight-knit story about the bond between the three main characters. However, it is also able to transform into a large-scale action movie over the final act. The set pieces are huge, the colors are bright and its quite the shift in tone. While it loses focus in moments, that central relationship is still at the heart of the film.
Lupita Nyong’o (Roz), Kit Connor (Brightbill) and Pedro Pascal (Fink) all deserve praise for their voice acting. Even as a robot that seemingly can’t convey emotion, Nyong’o is able to do so much with her voice. All of the animals have their own charm, but these three absolutely bring their A-game.
This is a symphony of triumph in animation. “The Wild Robot” is able to take a lot of themes that we’ve seen before, and turn it into something magical. The visuals are immersive, the story is fast-paced and it’s a perfect movie for people of all ages.
