“Dog Man” follows the titular character as he learns to embrace his new identity after a life-saving surgery, while also stopping feline supervillain Petey the Cat from cloning himself and going on a crime spree.

“Dog Man” is hilarious… for people of all ages. The film is full of humor that will have adults laughing, which is oftentimes hard for children’s movies to do. The themes about friendship and kindness provide great messages for younger viewers. While its commitment to expressing these ideas becomes convoluted at times, the movie still manages to pull it all together by the end.

The animation is crisp, able to seamlessly integrate a comic book-like style into the entire 94-minute runtime. Transitions and editing techniques aid in this as well. The voice acting adds to the technical success of the movie, with fun performances from Lil Rel Howery as Chief and Pete Davidson as Petey.

“Dog Man” features a character named 80-HD, and that pretty much sums up the entire movie. The film bounces from idea to idea, not necessarily having a coherent plot the entire time. While this can be frustrating regarding the directionless nature, it also means that it’s never boring.

Because of the constant shifting, the film loses focus of its main character in moments. It also goes very large in scale — almost too much so. The best moments come from simple Dog Man and Petey shenanigans.

“Dog Man” is a pleasant surprise that will undoubtedly be an easy movie for families to sit down and enjoy for years to come.
