Performances Drive the Horror
Horror movies live or die depending on the onscreen individuals’ backstory, chemistry and development. From top to bottom, “Bring Her Back” excels in the character department. The cast carries much of this success. Sally Hawkins, Billy Barratt, Sora Wong and Jonah Wren Phillips all shine.
Hawkins delivers an incredibly sinister presence through her dialogue and mannerisms. She plays a straightforward character but highlights small quirks that consistently add tension. Barratt and Wong have tremendous chemistry as siblings. Their relationship anchors the film and helps the emotional moments land. Phillips has the least screen time of the four but makes his presence felt with minimal dialogue.
Building Dread with Atmosphere and Restraint
If you come to “Bring Her Back” for horror, it will almost certainly deliver. The film includes several memorable moments – a few even caused audible gags from other audience members. The bloody carnage and close-your-eyes scenes are present, but the movie’s real horror comes from the buildup.
The 99-minute runtime constantly eats away at your psyche. The film reveals many pieces early on, giving you a general sense of where it’s heading, yet the buildup kept me on the edge of my seat.
“Bring Her Back” avoids over-relying on jump scares, instead building a consistently eerie atmosphere. Its simple shooting style, set design and sound design all contribute.
The strong script, performances and practical effects carry the film’s tension. Similar to “Hereditary,” “Bring Her Back” delivers pure dread. It hits hard as the credits roll and lingers in your mind long after.
A Subtle, Emotional Finale
The ending of “Bring Her Back” is subtle. It doesn’t try to be flashy but instead provides an emotional bookend. While some elements feel slightly rushed as the film closes, it remains a strong finale.
Horror movies often fall into basic formulas in their final acts, but “Bring Her Back” avoids this trap. While “Talk to Me” aimed for mainstream horror audiences, “Bring Her Back” may not. It unfolds as a true slow burn, diving deeply into characters and mystery.
This approach feels very different from the Philippou brothers’ previous work, but that’s a strength. “Bring Her Back” proves to be a masterclass in horror, combining haunting imagery with a powerful emotional core. Directors Danny and Michael Philippou deliver another hit, and this one surpasses “Talk to Me.”
