“F1® The Movie” follows Sonny Hayes, who returns to racing 30 years after an accident on the track nearly ended his career.
This is the summer blockbuster everyone’s been waiting for.
Directed by Joseph Kosinski (“Top Gun: Maverick”), the film brings the same high-octane thrills. Just swap fighter jets for Formula 1 cars.
Pure Racing Adrenaline
Heart-pounding, visceral and stunning – those are the best words to describe “F1®”‘s racing sequences. The on-track action feels exhilarating thanks to the cinematography and sound mix. Every swerve, crash and hairpin turn hits like a punch to the chest. The way the camera weaves between cars, paired with the deafening engine sounds, makes the racing feel as intense as any big-screen spectacle in years.
The movie doubles down on that intensity with a soundtrack that feels made for summer. A mix of adrenaline-pumping songs fuel the racing montages and training sequences, making each moment feel electric.
Characters in the Driver’s Seat
On an emotional level, “F1®” holds its own. Brad Pitt’s Sonny Hayes carries a layered backstory, balancing swagger with vulnerability as he returns to the sport that nearly broke him. Alongside him, Damson Idris brings fire as rookie driver Joshua Pearce, while Kerry Condon (Kate) and Javier Bardem (Ruben Cervantes) round out a solid ensemble.
These characters follow familiar arcs – mentor, underdog, love interest and team boss – but their personalities and performances add enough charm to keep it all engaging.
Pitt is perfectly cast. His effortlessly cool persona sells the role of a seasoned racer who doesn’t need to say much to own every scene. Idris matches him beat for beat, with sharp banter that turns their dynamic into one of the film’s highlights.
Fumbles in the Pits, Fireworks on the Tracks
When the characters collide off the track, “F1®” veers into generic territory. Relationship arcs and narratives are often telegraphed from a mile away, which undercuts the intertwined emotional stakes. Still, the third act delivers payoff after payoff to help smooth over some of the rough edges.
While the formulaic plot sags in places, “F1®” never forgets what it’s here to do: deliver a spectacle. And it does.
From the globe-trotting locations to the constant roar of engines, this is blockbuster entertainment firing on all cylinders. “F1® The Movie” isn’t perfect between the races, but when the pedal hits the metal, it’s impossible not to get swept up in the ride.
