“Superman” follows the Man of Steel as his actions are questioned, giving billionaire Lex Luthor the opportunity to get him out of the way for good.
David Corenswet embodies the character to perfection. He is Superman. From his physicality to the way he delivers every line, Corenswet breathes life into the Man of Steel. Combined with powerful character moments, his portrayal makes this Superman one of the most compelling and hopeful iterations yet.
What makes “Superman” soar isn’t just the big moments. Instead, it’s the quiet ones. Small conversations between Clark and those closest to him transform a superhero into a relatable human being. He isn’t just trying to save the world; he’s trying to be good. That humanity shines through in every scene.
The score plays a part in this. It booms at just the right moments, reinforcing Superman’s role as a symbol of hope. He isn’t worshipped or lauded with praise. Rather, he’s a glimpse of a better world.
Corenswet is joined by an exceptional supporting cast. Rachel Brosnahan brings warmth to Lois Lane, acting as both Clark’s challenger and most trusted friend. Nicholas Hoult leans fully into the strangeness of Lex Luthor, making him extremely unlikable in the process. Skyler Gisondo as Jimmy Olsen and Anthony Carrigan as Metamorpho are two other standouts. The true scene-stealer is no person at all. It’s Krypto the Superdog. He brings both humor and heart with just the right amount of chaos.
The action in “Superman” is massive, as expected. While the CGI isn’t flawless, it delivers where it counts. This is enhanced by creative POV shots, whirlwind choreography and sharp editing.
Though some claim “Superman” avoids politics, it most certainly is a statement film. It tackles the themes of power-hungry dictators, anti-immigrant mindsets and unwarranted invasions. The ideas are woven in with care, helping to shape the world Superman protects.
The film does wander during its focus on side characters. Small sections feel bloated and drag the pacing, but they ultimately contribute to Superman’s larger story. The people around him are part of what defines him.
“Superman” is full of hope. So much so that it’s almost impossible not to fall in love with it. It’s packed with action and brimming with the kind of optimism that’s been missing from the DC Universe for too long. James Gunn has delivered the Superman we needed and Corenswet makes it easy to believe again.
