“The SpongeBob Movie: Search for SquarePants” follows SpongeBob as he goes on a seafaring adventure with a swashbuckling ghost pirate known as the Flying Dutchman while trying to prove his bravery.
Now that SpongeBob is 36 clams tall, he’s a “big guy.” This means you’re in for “big” fun with “Search for SquarePants.”
Growing Up, Bikini Bottom Style
The idea of growing up is at the core of “The SpongeBob Movie.” The film explores themes of maturity, bravery and friendship. This exploration of ideas isn’t groundbreaking – which should go without saying.
However, as a kids’ movie, “Search for SquarePants” succeeds at sending a positive message to its young audience. Everyone has a desire to grow up, but in reality, it’s OK to just be a kid. Especially since those years don’t last forever.
This message shines through as the credits begin to roll, but it’s not always the movie’s central focus. “The SpongeBob Movie” is extremely juvenile. What else would you expect? The humor is low-brow, with never-ending butt jokes.
Still, there are a few comedic moments that will likely earn a chuckle from adult viewers. All that really matters, though: young audience members will be laughing, most likely in “ba-ha-ha” style like SpongeBob himself.
Familiar Faces, Short Stays
“Search for SquarePants” immediately introduces all of the classic characters viewers love. However, it just as quickly says goodbye to many of them.
Sandy Cheeks, Plankton and other favorites don’t see much screen time in “The SpongeBob Movie.” While they largely aren’t needed for this specific story, longtime fans may be left disappointed by their absence.
“The SpongeBob Movie” flies by with an 88-minute runtime. It’s the perfect length for a film of this nature, keeping things short and sweet for viewers of all ages.
Big-Screen SpongeBob Energy
The animation in “Search for SquarePants” will have kids’ eyes glued to the screen. The beloved characters receive a 3D style while still maintaining their classic look. This vibrant approach is fit for the big screen, distinguishing itself from the long-running series.
Still, the film includes classic gags, like 2D close-up stills and live-action integrations. Even with the big-screen budget, “The SpongeBob Movie” maintains its signature appeal.
Tom Kenny (SpongeBob SquarePants and Gary the Snail), Bill Fagerbakke (Patrick Star), Clancy Brown (Mr. Krabs), Rodger Bumpass (Squidward Tentacles), Carolyn Lawrence (Sandy Cheeks) and Mr. Lawrence (Plankton) all reprise their roles.
Mark Hamill (The Flying Dutchman), Regina Hall (Barb), George Lopez (JK Fishlips) and Ice Spice (Ticket Taker) also make appearances.
Everyone is at the top of their game in “Search for SquarePants.” Original cast members bring iconic characters to life on the big screen, while newcomers add quirks to new personalities.
Director Derek Drymon continues the franchise successfully. “The SpongeBob Movie” isn’t bold, but it works. This does just enough to craft its own identity for younger audiences while remaining nostalgic for adults.
“The SpongeBob Movie: Search for SquarePants” is childish… and that’s the point. The low-brow humor mixed with just enough heart makes this a ba-ha-ha-worthy family film.
