Ranking all five ‘The Strangers’ movies (including ‘Chapter 3’)

“The Strangers” franchise has never been known for having “good” movies. But that doesn’t mean they’re not enjoyable.

The masked killers are some of the most iconic in horror history because of their simplicity. They’re light on words, yet utter unforgettable lines like “Is Tamara here?” and “Because you were home.”

Now that Renny Harlin’s trilogy is concluded with “Chapter 3,” it’s the perfect time to rank the series.

1. ‘The Strangers: Prey at Night’ (2018)

It’s full of illogical decisions and slasher tropes. But “The Strangers: Prey at Night” is pure nostalgia bait and it works.

The simplicity of the first film is expanded upon here. Director Johannes Roberts injects an old-school style into “Prey at Night,” with bigger set pieces and a higher body count.

The visuals themselves are more eccentric, with the final act providing a jolt of ’70s- and ’80s-inspired carnage.

“The Strangers: Prey at Night” struggles to reach “great” status. It’s a lot of fun nonetheless.

Rating: 3.5 out of 5.

2. ‘The Strangers’ (2008)

“The Strangers” masterfully establishes tension through its motiveless killers. The direction by Bryan Bertino and cinematography by Peter Sova add to the quietness. Capturing the killers simply standing and staring does wonders in heightening fear.

It’s minimalistic, mostly taking place in a single, isolated location.

The film has all the ingredients to be a horror classic. And while it features some of the defining killers of the 2000s, character decisions mixed with pacing issues hold it back.

“The Strangers” is the most unsettling film of the series. But it lacks the entertainment that its successor provides.

Rating: 3 out of 5.

3. ‘The Strangers – Chapter 2’ (2025)

“The Strangers – Chapter 2” adds lore to the masked killers’ backstory while moving the story in bold new directions.

Creating a world of conspiracies and secrets, the film succeeds in generating intensity. All of the most interesting questions are left unanswered, however.

“Chapter 2” is full of creative ideas but ultimately feels incomplete. Solid performances and creative camerawork keep it afloat, making it the most memorable installment of Harlin’s trilogy.

Rating: 3 out of 5.

4. ‘The Strangers – Chapter 1’ (2024)

“The Strangers – Chapter 1” brings the talent of Madelaine Petsch (Maya) to the franchise. Outside of that, however, it doesn’t add anything new to the table.

The movie is never able to warrant its existence, simply following a rinse-and-repeat formula. It recreates the atmosphere of the 2008 original and nothing extra.

Because of this, “Chapter 1” is a frustrating watch. There’s a lot to like, but this is too derivative for its own good.

Rating: 2.5 out of 5.

5. ‘The Strangers – Chapter 3’ (2026)

Much like the first two installments of Harlin’s trilogy, “The Strangers – Chapter 3” lacks satisfying answers. And it almost insults the audience’s intelligence with how many inconceivable character decisions there are.

Playing part prequel and part sequel, it’s never able to maintain momentum.

Instead, “Chapter 3” goes out with… a whimper.

Rating: 2 out of 5.
