Lisa Frankenstein comes out on Friday, Feb. 9, but I was able to see it at AMC Scream Unseen on Monday. The film follows Lisa and a reanimated corpse who embark on a murderous journey to find love and happiness.
The marketing for this flick has been right on point — it’s dumb and absurd, but also downright hilarious at times. There is some phenomenal dark humor here that had my entire theater laughing. With a PG-13 rating, it’s definitely light on the gore and horror, but the comedy more than makes up for that. Outside of Self Reliance, this is the most that I’ve laughed during a movie so far this year.
Most of the comedic success is due to the chemistry between Kathryn Newton and Cole Sprouse. While Sprouse doesn’t speak, the pair bounces off of each other well. I’ve enjoyed Newton in previous works, and that continued here. She is charismatic, charming and energetic in the role, delivering a great performance.
The first quarter of Lisa Frankenstein feels slightly different than the rest of the movie. It’s somewhat slow moving, yet the character development seems very rushed. Reactions to certain events felt tame and uninspired, but the dark silliness of the plot itself is more embraced in the second half to where it actually works.
Lisa Frankenstein is unapologetically unserious, and… that’s exactly why the film works. Sometimes movies like this can go too over-the-top — this, however, presses all the right buttons, delivering a highly enjoyable “horror” comedy. Be prepared to turn off your brain for 101 minutes, and I think you’ll have a blast with Lisa Frankenstein.
