“Watch the Skies” follows a rebellious teen and members of a UFO club who embark on an adventure that takes them far beyond the boundaries of our world.
A Blast of Wonder and Weirdness
“Watch the Skies” drips with nostalgia. It captures the excitement of discovering the unknown and the belief that something bigger is out there. That spirit pulses through every scene, making the experience feel warm, familiar and exciting all at once.
Quirky Characters and Cosmic Chaos
Creativity fuels the movie’s charm. There are loads of ideas packed into the 115-minute runtime, especially in the final 45 minutes where the film fully leans into its sci-fi roots.
The characters steal the show. “Watch the Skies” turns a group of so-called “freaks” into an endlessly likable crew. Each has a distinct voice, even if some get more screen time than others. Inez Dahl Torhaug’s Denise and Jesper Barkselius’ Lennart form the emotional center, and they shine.
“Watch the Skies” works well as a sci-fi flick, but it also succeeds in action, comedy and drama.
Large portions of the movie are dialogue-driven, generating investment in the characters. Other parts dive into UFOs and scientific theories. At times, there are also full-on action sequences. While it may sound all over the place, “Watch the Skies” balances these elements perfectly.
A Bold Dub with a Few Bugs
“Watch the Skies” has an interesting caveat – it features AI-driven “visual dubbing.” Originally released in Swedish as “UFO Sweden” in 2022, this updated version has new English dialogue from real voice actors that is synced with actors’ mouth movements. This is compliant with SAG-AFTRA.
I’m all for trying something new to give a movie more publicity in a different market. I’m also for watching movies in their truest nature. Because of this, I found myself distracted by slight imperfections in “Watch the Skies.”
Voice-over performances are never quite able to match up with the emotion and impact of the original. This was the case at times in “Watch the Skies.” Combined with the use of AI to change the mouth movements, it does make for a slightly strange experience.
“Watch the Skies” is a refreshing piece of cinema that nostalgically captures humans’ desire to discover the unknown. It features a bold central sci-fi storyline alongside shades of drama, action and comedy. Whether you’re watching the original release of “UFO Sweden” or this new rendition, this is a movie that deserves to be seen.
