In the year of horror comedies, “Clown in a Cornfield” lands in the upper pack. There’s a lot of effective generational comedy alongside the occasional clown joke. While some of these moments don’t land, I found myself laughing more often than not.

Twists, Stumbles and a Strong Finish

Frendo the Clown features a top-notch design that isn’t overly complex, yet remains creepy and memorable. Despite his menacing appearance, Frendo lacks something essential. In a movie that leans into comedy, I was surprised he didn’t deliver more one-liners.

“Clown in a Cornfield” continuously subverts expectations. Some reveals are obvious, but the film throws in twists that caught me off guard. While the first half left me underwhelmed, the final 45 minutes explode into nonstop chaos.

Slick Slasher, Shaky Setup

The story leans heavily into carnage, though the kills often follow a similar pattern. That lack of variety may disappoint horror fans craving more creativity.

Several early scenes are packed with exposition. Especially in the first act, the movie overexplains its characters and town history. While it improves over time, some dialogue still feels forced.

“Clown in a Cornfield” succeeds because of Frendo. The story is generic, pacing is inconsistent and the dialogue can stumble. Still, it has charm. The mix of comedy and horror hits the beats it needs to – and occasionally goes beyond.
