“Mission: Impossible — The Final Reckoning” follows Ethan Hunt and the IMF team as they race against time to find the Entity, a rogue artificial intelligence that can destroy humanity.
A Rocky Start and a Refined Threat
The opening of “Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning” stumbles out of the gate. The film delivers a heavy dose of nostalgia while constantly reminding viewers about the previous installment. These cutaways and flashbacks disrupt the pacing early on.
In “Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning,” the Entity came off as a somewhat cheesy threat. In this film, it reveals its sinister side from the start, establishing itself as a genuine danger to humanity.
Tension Over Spectacle
Unlike the past several installments, “The Final Reckoning” dials back the large-scale action. While it still features adrenaline-pumping moments, it builds more tension through suspenseful sequences that expand the world around them. These scenes may not be the most dazzling in the franchise, but they help create one of the series’ most intriguing threats.
Still, some segments feel misplaced. At times, the movie strays from the franchise’s identity, trying to become something else. While it finds its footing eventually, trimming some of the 169-minute runtime could’ve improved the overall flow.
A Fitting Farewell for Ethan Hunt
“The Final Reckoning” ties together threads from all the previous films in unexpected ways. It raises the stakes, making this feel like Ethan’s biggest mission yet. That weight fuels the tension and gives the story a proper sense of finality.
As Ethan’s swan song, the film gives him space to shine. It highlights his flaws and sacrifices across the series while honoring his legacy.
“Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning” feels different from its predecessors, but not in a bad way. It trades relentless action for deeper character focus. By giving Cruise, Ving Rhames, Simon Pegg and Hayley Atwell the spotlight, it celebrates the franchise’s heart. Fans will cheer as Cruise does what he does best –risking everything to bring Ethan Hunt to life one last time.
