“The Threesome” follows a young man and two women who are left to deal with sobering real-world consequences after an unexpected threesome.
“A heart that’s afraid to break is a heart that’s never used.”
The message is prevalent in “The Threesome” – a film about the complexities of love, navigating modern dating culture, maturing into adulthood and the ups and downs of pregnancy. The movie does so much, while also feeling wholesomely simple.
A Trio of Standout Performances
At the heart of the film are three exceptional performances from Zoey Deutch (Olivia), Ruby Cruz (Jenny) and Jonah Hauer-King (Connor).
All three bring touches of realism to the characters. Deutch is more outgoing and charming, with an energetic smile bringing her role to life. Cruz is more introverted and quiet, but her expressions and mannerisms say more than words. Hauer-King is able to carry weight with his words and facial reactions.
These three performances are the heartbeat of the film, bringing it to life at every level. Their onscreen chemistry is unmatched, delivering on the romantic, emotional and comedic sides.
Another standout performance comes from Jaboukie Young-White (Greg), who is at the helm of much of the film’s comedy. Young-White delivers line after line of humor and nails it almost every time.
More Than Its Title Suggests
Coinciding with the performances is the film’s dedication to character development. At 112 minutes, “The Threesome” takes its time analyzing these individuals. It’s a trifecta of a character study, with three people sharing the spotlight. Even with the split focus, all three feel equally impactful as the movie draws to a close.
With a title as direct as “The Threesome,” you’d expect a raunchy rom-com. Surprisingly, it’s extremely heartfelt.
It’s an intimate look at the complexities of pregnancy, including discussions on abortion, single parenting and maturing even when you might not be ready. The story is presented in an over-the-top, humorous scenario, but that doesn’t make the real-world themes any less powerful.
A Lively and Heartfelt Experience
This isn’t to say that “The Threesome” isn’t funny. In fact, it’s one of the most hilarious films of 2025. The movie blends serious subjects into an absurd setup made for the big screen. The characters feel alive, making out-of-pocket jokes and repeating mistakes, capturing the hilarious chaos that real life often provides.
As director, Chad Hartigan brings style. The film utilizes creative shots and sharp editing to heighten even its most simplistic moments. Whether it’s characters simply interacting or sitting in silence, the camera is always moving, making the settings feel lively and lived in. This is another element that breathes energy into the movie.
“The Threesome” is a hidden gem for those seeking a heartfelt yet laugh-out-loud experience. It features great performances, a well-written script and lively direction. The title alone may deter some viewers, but beneath the comedic surface is a truly intimate and emotional journey.
